Diversed Davao

Despite of modernization Davao City is enriched with values, culture, and tradition. Because the community of native people such as Mandayas, B’laans, Mansakas, Manobos, Atas, and Lumads still have the sense of continuance of their believes and practices. The local government is also active in introducing the local culture showing the significance of their existence to the new generation.

These tribes were the first Christians who were ruled-over by the Spaniards during the Spanish occupation. It was in the year 1848 when a chapel (named Nueva Vergara) was built under the power of Oyanguren, a Spanish ruler. Thereafter, a military government was settled in the said chapel and had been named the 4th district of Mindanao. Later on, the name Nueva Vergara was recognized as Davao, its innate term.

The mining, fishing and agricultural industry keeps the economy of Davao City flourished. The abundance of crops like Banana, copra, corn, abaca is the major product of the agriculture industry. Durian and Mangosteen are considered as king and queen of Philippine fruits, making Davao the country's fruit basket.

Jack's Ridge: Making History in Davao City

The land on which Jack's Ridge now stand once formed part of the headquarter of the retreating Japanese forces towards the end of the World War II. The Americans had landed in Davao on May 1, 1945, forcing the Japanese to beat a path to Matina Hills where they had a commanding view of the Davao Gulf where the American ships were anchored. Fierce fighting soon erupted between the two forces, and as history shown us, the Japanese lost.

Today, more than half a century later, Jack's Ridge is filled with reminders of its historic past. Caves dug by the Japanese pockmark the area, and once in a while people still find bullets and other war materials in the rocky soil.
There is also talk that hidden somewhere in the caved are gold bullions and other treasure that the Japanese had taken from other countries and brought to Davao.
Whatever the truth is about the treasure, Jack's Ridge maintains the feature that made it an important outpost for the retreating Japanese forces, a commanding view of Davao City and the Gulf, the same view within the premises is also refreshing, since the owner has made its mission to preserve the natural beauty of the place.

Jack's Ridge was built to offer a completely new experience to dinners, and its not over yet, more development are under way to make it the premier dining resort in Davao City.
Indeed, Jack's Ridge is making it's own mark in Davao City's History.

It's really lowland to highland abundance, Davao is rich in seafood aside from the fruits and vegetables that are only available in the city. There are several delicacies in Davao that you should not fail to savor when you visit the city. One of them is grilled tuna, which is served in most of the restaurants there.
Another one is kinilaw davao, a sizzling mixture of raw marlin spiced with vinegar sauce and Davao Pomelo.

Fish is served in a variety of ways: some are grilled over charcoal, or peppered with some lemon grass and ginger. Other destinations are cultural featuring the best of the people's culture and arts, while others are simply havens for those who would love to spend a lovely tropical vacation.

Some of the historic sites in Davao City include the Battle Memorial, a historical marker memorializing the longest battle between the Japanese and Filipino-American forces during World War II. Another place to visit is the Davao Historical Society Museum, which features its historic collections, located in Magsaysay Park. The Uyanguren Landing Site marks the area where the Spanish conqueror, which name it bears, first landed. He later became Davao's first governor.

Some of the cultural sites in Davao City include the Japanese Peace Memorial Shrine where pilgrimages of Japanese war veterans are made, Lon Wa Buddhist Temple, the San Pedro Cathedral, and the city's Mosques. Another interesting site to check out is the Philippine Eagle Center, which is a sanctuary for the Philippine Eagle, an endangered and one of the largest of its species. If you're a bit outgoing, then you may try climbing Mount Apo and enjoy the panoramic view.

If you're looking to relax and unwind then you may check out some of the city's resorts. A couple of places you might like to visit are Eden Nature Park, and Paradise Island. Other fun and thrilling activities here include river rafting along the Davao River and feeding crocks at the Crocodile Park.

The coastline of Davao is spanned by a lot of dive sites. Some of these dive sits include Ligid Cave, Big Rock, Pinnacle, East Point, Aundanao, and Mushroom Rock. You may contact any of the dive centers in the city to schedule your dives.

Japanese Tunnel in Davao

There are several historical landmarks in Davao, but few have captured the public imagination quite like the Japanese Tunnel.

Although there are several of these tunnels in Davao, the most famous is the one of the D' Japanese Tunnel Family Resort (Matina Balusong, Diversion Road, Davao City,) For a small amount ($1.25) you will get a guided tour of the famous Japanese Tunnel.

As you approach the tunnel, among the first things that you will see are beautiful statues, including that of a World War II Japanese soldier and a Japanese woman clad in a kimono. Throughout the tunnel you will also find several statues of Japanese soldiers as well.

The Japanese Tunnel itself is not that long per se (only about 300 meters, or a thousand feet), but there are several locations there that can take you farther. However, tourists are not allowed to go there because it is not owned by the proprietors.

Guided by the installed lighting, you will be led by your guide to several steps where you will see the various weaponry, water banker, and offices of the Japanese soldiers. Also, there are several chapels there, including one where a copy of the Golden Buddha can be seen. As you go deeper into the Japanese Tunnel, you will come upon vintage machine guns, bombs, explosives and plenty of ammo and bullets.
Interestingly, there were plenty of gold molders found in the Japanese Tunnel. Whether this meant the soldiers stocked up gold in the tunnel, or were digging for some, is not clear, but certainly adds to the fascination in the area.

There are actually several of these tunnels in the various diversion roads all over Davao City, including Maa and Mintal. The reason for this is that during World War II, the Japanese found the use of tunnels as an effective means of transporting their equipment and mobilizing their forces, as it made it more difficult for the Americans to locate them.

According to the reports, some of these tunnels were long, some going on for several kilometers. Even more, there were also areas where they would crisscross and intersect.
These Japanese tunnels were created using manual labor, and thousands of Filipinos were utilized as slaves to dig and excavate the tunnels. After the war, most of these tunnels were destroyed as the city was rehabilitated. However, a few were preserved and became the tourist spot and historical landmarks they are today.

King of Philippine Fruits: Durian

But Davao is not Davao without the fabled durian. Idle tales go that Davao’s treasures are guarded by fairies and mystical spirits whose food staple is durian—a kind of food of the gods. Thus, where durian abounds treasures are hid, they say. But watch out for the wrath of the gods.

Durian is a tropical fruit similar to jack fruit—only more velvety and, like wine, alluring. Its hard, spiked crust keeps the edible flesh intact inside. The strange smell could mislead the uninitiated into misjudging it unfairly, throw it off, and miss out on the best thing in Davao.

To others, the aroma is like aged wine—durian’s and Davao’s, that is. It can entice you into having endless one last tries until the intoxication gets you hooked for life.

A five-hectare farm—this is one of the places in Calinan where the heavenly fruit proliferates. It used to be a coconut farm converted by owner, Elmer Solomon, into a durian farm. It’s more productive now—luring more enthralled buyers. It is an attraction to both local and foreign tourists who love durian or are curious about the fruit.
