8 Best Things to Experience Davao City

Dubbed as “City in Bloom,” “Most Livable City in The Philippines,” “Safest City in the Philippines,”  “Asian City of the Future,” and so many others. These are unquestionable about Davao City but if you want to know more you should experience it to finally say - LIFE IS REALLY HERE!

Working in the Hospitality industry allowed me not only to sell the city as a place to visit but a home to be comfortable at. For first the time visitors, the number one question they are curious about is, “What’s in Davao?”

So let me give the top things you must try in Davao.

1.              King and Queen of the Philippine Fruits – Davao City is considered as the “Fruit Basket” of the Philippines. It does not only grow the best fruits in the country but the exotic  Durian, Pomelo and Mangoosten.
2.              Orchid Capital – The city is not only a great source of exotic fruit but of beautiful flowers. Being tagged as City in Bloom does not only relate to its growing industries but of its bountiful flora and fauna.
3.              The King of Philippine Jungle – Seeing the Philippine Eagle in Davao is another experience you should try. It will not only show the result of preservation or conservation but the richness of the Philippine jungle.
4.              The Crocodile Park – It is another place you should not miss. The park has select of rear wildlife aside from its crocodile.
5.              The White Sand Beaches - Your experience will never be complete without exploring the white sand beaches near the city proper. Dive, explore and enjoy at Samal now!
6.              Mountain Treks – Rejuvenate life, restore your vitality by going close to the nature. Listen to the music of your own soul at the Eden Nature Park or at Loleng's Mountain Resort.
7.              Historic Site – Forget not about the past by seeing the remains of the native Davaoeños in the City's Museum or places like Jack’s Ridge or the Japanese Tunnel.
8.              Fresh Seafoods – Satisfy you craving by discovering the different kinds of seafoods of your interest in places like Tuna Marina, Afats Restaurant and Let’s Eat Crab.

How can you buy the best Pomelo in Davao?

Round and light green – know this fruit? Pomelo! What are your bases in buying Pomelo? Price? Brand? Never should it be. When you choose the best Pomelo never be deceived with its cheap price or its known brand name.Trying to buy it in the most reasonable price is really a wrong way.

The sweetness of Pomelo can be a factor in buying but not all the time we can taste it before we buy it. All we are seeing is its round and light green appearance. The number one thing you should remember in buying a box of pomelo is its weight. The heavier the pomelo is the better it can be.

Pomelo belongs to the Citrus family and it is one of the largest and juiciest fruits on our planet. Pomelo originated in China and it was mentioned in ancient Chinese books. It has juicy flesh of sweet with some sourish smack taste. This is considered as one of the ideal fruits for cleansing.
The fruit is rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene and the B vitamins. It is also a source of folic acid that is essential for young women to ensure the health of future baby. Also, pomelo contains a lot of potassium that is good for our heart. New studies show that limonoids found in pomelo and other citrus fruits prevent cancer cells from divining better than chemical medicines. Researchers emphasized that limonoids have more lasting effect than current drugs.
Try it now and be replenished!

Dencia’s Restaurant Davao’s Best Chosuey

Davao Dencia’s Restaurant has been the local destination for a classic Chinese cuisine in Davao. The tokwa’t baboy, congee, fresh lumpia and pancit canton are just some of the good dishes available.

But for people like me(diet conscious as they say) I really love to order the Fish Chopsuey that they have. The taste is really unique and for sure very healthy.

The restaurant has became my personal favorite since the place has a comfortable dining area. Budget wise - good choice.

Davao - Life is Here Campaign

I first fall in love with Davao when I moved to this City to earn a college degree. From my very first day of moving to Davao until today I never had a day of regret or dissatisfaction being a resident here. This City is not only a melting pot of all the tribes in its neighboring places but a home of the many races.
Davao City's - Life is Here Campaign is a very good tag line in promoting the city's tourism. To live with complete security with the basic needs possible is something Davao can offer. It does not only promote peace but it also promise a good life through it's booming industries.

The uniqueness of the city in terms of cultural background, good governance, inviting places, exotic food, exciting activities and everything  else are just few of the many factors why LIFE IS HERE.

Investment? Career? Good life? Vacation? Whatever you like - Davao is surely a destination you must try.

What's you idea about Davao - Life is Here tagline? I would surely reply on your comments.

Dencia’s Restaurant Davao’s Crispy Pata

Food

Davao Dencia’s Restaurant has long been one of the favorite places to dine in when you want classic Davao-Chinese cuisine. They are known for their tokwa’t baboy, congee, fresh lumpia and pancit canton.

My personal fave there is this fried lumpia (veggie filling) that costs P23 a piece sliced into half for convenience in eating. Their fresh lumpia (lumpia sariwa with veggie filling) is another long time favorite that costs P22 a piece and I love the sauce which is a little sweet! Though it was only last month that I started eating it again. But when we go there recently, I would order this fried lumpia and my hungry tummy is appeased. I began liking their fried lumpia when we visited this place last month, the waitress gave me this when I actually mean was the fresh lumpia. No regrets though coz both are equally delicious.

One of  my former bosses introduced me to their fresh lumpia years ago and I loved it since. Though our early favorites had been their lumpia shanghai (which is hubby Charles’ fave now there) and their pancit con chopsuey. These two dishes would always be ordered by my former officemates when we would eat there years ago. Dencia’s have many happy and tummy-filling memories for me and my former officemates in one of the companies I have worked for before.
One thing I have to try there is their congee. I think they open at 7:00 in the morning and serve this as well as the tokwa’t baboy for breakfast. Their other food will be available by 10:30AM and they close at 9:00PM if I am not mistaken.

Serious Wild Water Adventure in Davao City!

7am: We started a cold day going to the Crocodile Park for our assembly for the big event for the day - Wild Water Rafting. We were given the orientation about the activities and the unexpected adventure to expect.

WE left at 9:30 am going to our "Put in Area" at Tamugan. Our thrill started to arise as we arrived at the area seeing the running water calling us for the race.

Before we started rafting at 11:00, we were tested and guided on the do's and don't's whenever our boat will capsize or someone from our team will fell off the boat.

We are on our diets but on that day - we were not. All our energies were burnt out as early as the first hour of trip and all we knew was "WE were all hungry, craving for food." We had our lunch near the river bank, it was not only about food that time since we were given the chance to experience nature and be with the nature. Personally I was able to appreciate life while breathing with the green surrounding hearing the songs of the river as it flowed freely.

After lunch, we packed and left nothing on the site. No plastics or anything.(Going Green)

We were also able to see the Monkey Wall and the Vanishing Falls or Ms. Vanessa, our team named her so...lol..Rafting with the Wild Water was not about a race to play but of relationship to build. Seeing the other boat being capsized, we were there extending out paddle and a space on our boat to save them. (Sweet!)

The race was really crazy especially during those times when we had to paddle and row our boat but we can't since the boat is not floating but flying.(Strong) There was a spot there called the "Washing Machine" - It drove our group crazy. We were shouting not only because of the adrenaline rush but for our brain, thinking that we have left our brain at one spot.

I had a bonus that day for being the most noisy team member - I volunteered to row my own boat. I love kayaking for the first time.

We arrived at the final point at 3:00 pm, with a phrase - "WE WANT MORE!"

The P2, 000.00 plus sun burns and sore throat (that's for the shouting!) that I paid was worth spending.

I'm not promoting them but our experience as a satisfied paddlers. Big Five! Hope to be back there for free.?!..lol

Manila: Top 3 in Asia's Most Sinful Cities

According to one of the posts in Yahoo Travel Manila, Philippines is top 3 as Asia's Most Sinful Cities. This poll can speak as a result of the loveliness of the Filipino female. But you wouldn't know it by talking to the Filipino men -- they're too busy gazing lustfully into the mirror.

According to a study from Synovate, Filipino men are the most narcissistic in Asia. There are 48 percent consider themselves sexually attractive.

For ladies counting these in their advantage, sorry -- nine out of 10 Filipino men said they liked to look good for themselves, not anyone else.

Five Things You Should Never Miss in Davao

Six years ago before finally staying in Davao, I have asked myself about the five most rewarding things I should experience in Davao. Now I'm listing them to help you enjoy your travel in this wonderful city. If you are that adventurous, try to create your own list. I'm sure it's an experience worth remembering.

1.Getting Exotic -  Trying the King of Philippine Fruits : Durian

Your travel in Davao is never complete without smelling your shoes- the smell of durian. It smells like hell but tastes like heaven. Durian is just one of the many fruits that are abundant in the city. Mangosteen, Lanzones, Marang and Pomelo are just so irresistible like any other fruits in the City. Pick some fresh durian now and pair it with a can of cola.  Make sure to limit your serving :-)

2. Experiencing the Perfect Beaches of Samal

A place like no other. Samal is another place you should see whenever you visit Davao. It showcases it's promising pink sand beaches, blue-green seawater and most of all affordable fun and adventure.

It's the newest landmark in the city. A very well maintained park which is open to public. Whenever you feel tired or exhausted this is one place you should see in Davao. It's perfect for any reason, People's Park- It's everyone's park.

4. Witnessing the Kadayawan Festival

When you get the chance to visit Davao in August, make sure it's close to Kadayawan Festival. The festival showcases not only the local produce but the abundance of culture, talents and harmony of its people.

5. Encounter with the King of Philippine Jungle: The Philippine Eagle

Not all Davaoeños have seen the King of Philippine Jungle. But if you want to be closer to nature try to visit Malagos Garden Resort. The resort have bird shows and has wide garden of Philippine Flora.

Lotus Court showcases Manila Hotel’s Mabuhay Palace Gastronomy

THIS month of April, Manila Hotel's chefs head south for Marco Polo Davao. The Davao hotel's Cantonese restaurant, Lotus Court, hosts two Manila Hotel chefs for the better part of the summer.

"From April 6 to May 15, 2011, Chef Wenceslao Gacutan and Executive Chinese Sous Chef Josephine (Joie) Yu Tanganco Candelaria will be concocting Mabuhay Palace original creations from the freshest ingredients in Davao," Marco Polo Davao Food and Beverage manager Bernard Bulaong said.

Chef Joie is a trilingual chef who regards excellence as her touchstone. She doffs her toque to her Executive Chef Konrad Walter, a Swiss national whose extensive experience spans his native land as well as Scotland, Bahrain, Macau, and the Philippines.

Executive Chef Konrad inspired her to think outside of the box and create what have become signature dishes of Mabuhay Palace, Manila Hotel's highly acclaimed Cantonese restaurant.

"Chef Joie's take on Long Life Prawns, vegetarian Peking duck, and salted egg ice cream took Manila by storm last month," Bulaong said.

These innovative dishes, unique to Mabuhay Palace, will be served in Lotus Court beginning 6 April. On offer as well are timeless classics, such as seafood and chicken, pork and beef dishes, with flavors both sensuous and appealing. Other Cantonese delights shall be the domain of Chef Wenceslao Gacutan whose talents in this area are nothing short of legendary.

Sample the extraordinary specialties of Chef Joie and Chef Wenceslao, which you can opt for in special a la carte menus or in sumptuous buffets at Lotus Court. Sunday lunch buffet shall be at P850.00 net per person. Payday dinner buffet with Mabuhay Palace menu highlights will be at P600 net per person on 15 and 30 April and on 15 May.

"This summer, stop by Marco Polo Davao's Lotus Court, to experience Mabuhay Palace's celebrated Cantonese cuisine and know why Chef Joie is the toast of the town," Bulaong concluded.

For inquiries and reservations, call 221-0888 local 7233.

Published in the Sun.Star Davao newspaper on April 06, 2011.

Marco Polo Davao's Lotus Court, to experience Mabuhay Palace

Emilio Yap (listed by Forbes last year as the 13th richest Filipino), is now acknowledged for having the best Chinese restaurant, called the Mabuhay Palace, in the country. The Mabuhay Palace has gained its reputation for offering exquisite gastronomic fares featuring Cantonese favourites as well as the extraordinary blend of dishes inspired by the cuisines of Beijing, Hong Kong and Guangdong. The Mabuhay Palace has been quietly garnering praises from customers; and the respect of the country’s noted food critiques and reviewers.

Philippine Tattler duly gave recognition to the Mabuhay Palace as one of the country’s best restaurants in 2009. It has since become a charming stop for breakfast or lunch with its buffet offerings although the real draw is still its dinners.

The good news is, Davao’s food aficionados may now have the rare opportunity to feast on the famed five-star Chinese cooking of the Manila Hotel’s Mabuhay Palace at the Lotus Court of the Marco Polo Hotel-Davao this summer season (April to May). Mabuhay Palace’s culinary virtuosos namely executive sous chef Josephine Yu Tanganco-Candelaria and chef Wenceslao Gacutan (former chefs of Mandarin Oriental Hotel’s Tin Hau) are in town busily concocting delightful dishes using the freshest of ingredients and produce Davao has to offer. The Mabuhay Palace’s culinary masters offer a lot of exciting flavours, textures and aromas to delight the palate of the loyal patrons of the Lotus Court. Theirs is refined food, more popularly known as fusion cuisine, which makes for sensational dining at the elegant Lotus Court.

Undeniably, the Mabuhay Palace’s Chinese fare has been modulated to accommodate well-heeled international tastes, but I like the menu to quibble over it. The Long Life Prawns (celestially light, miraculously ungreasy), the Beef Cubes in Honeyed Peppercorn Sauce (reminds me of a yummy beef dish I ate in Singapore which lingers in my memory), the Honey-Glazed Chicken Fillet in Crispy young Ginger, and the Slow-Cooked Pork Belly simmered in Shao Sing Wine (tastes like the delicate Japanese dish su buta) offer irrefutable proof of that.

To end Mabuhay Palace’s family style dinner at the Lotus Court, you just have to try chef Josephine’s ingeniously concocted salted egg ice cream which took Manila by storm last month. “This original ice cream recipe was created from a wonderful culinary dream. I’ve made other good recipes from dreams I’ve had,” explained chef Josephine. Oh my, keep on dreaming, chef Josephine!

“Now you know why chef Josephine Yu Tanganco-Candelaria was handpicked by Mr. Emilio Yap himself. The good natured chef has since become the toast of the town. Chef Josephine thinks outside of the box and has masterfully created innovative recipes that have become signature dishes of the highly acclaimed Mabuhay Palace of the Manila Hotel,” said the recently promoted Food and Beverage Director of the Marco Polo Hotel-Davao, Bernard Bulaong.

“This is one good opportunity to try Mabuhay Palace’s celebrated Cantonese fusion cuisine, either through a la carte or sumptuous buffet style, right here at the Lotus Court of the Marco Polo Hotel-Davao,” informed PR Executive Meg Sta. Ines.

La Toscana: Italian Bar and Restaurant

It must be one of the coziest restaurant in town. Its intricate iron and wood furniture lends a decidely European ambiance. Wines are arranged neatly in a wine racks interspersed with photos of famous diners. Lunch at La Toscana is a refuge from the heat and throbbing noise in the street which happens to be one of the major thoroughfares.

Dinner in this restaurant is a dream. The light are muted, the music soft and atmosphere immediately pulls down your stress level several notches lower. It is perfect for a quite celebration of intimate friends or a lover's tryst. Life is good.

Piero who now can entertain patrons-turned-friends, leave some of that cooking to his assistants who are well-trained in the Tuscan cuisine. Because everything is done fresh, it takes a little waiting time for the food to be served though a plate of Affettato Misto(thin slices of assorted golden meat with tomato and olives)or a Prosciutto di parma (wafer thin ham with garnishings) can be whipped up in no time at all.

There is quite an interesting array of soup. There is the popular Minestrone, and the Tuscany famous soup:Zuppa di pesce(seafood soup),Zuppa di Cipolle(sweet onion soup) and Ribollita besenzio. For salad we have Insalata verde, insalata di mare, parmigiana terina and Nicoise.

One only has to flip through the thick menu to feel the stomach grumbling. The menus guide you perfectly through the photos. We have tagliatelle a fresh flat pasta which either served with mushroom, or with seafood. Pappardelle is flat but has a serrated egde, tortellini is rolled pasta with meat fillings, penne is a short-ribbed pasta.

For pizza we have a variety to choose from, all hand-tossed just the way we do it in Italy. There is Capricciosa, Alla Romana, Italian Volcano,al Tonno, Alla Marinara,Calzone,Margherita, and Alla Vegetariana. Risotto(rice dish)also comes in different variants seafood, mushrooms, meat and vegetables.
